At first sight the keto diet might look like a perfect weight loss tool – but do people read the science before starting the diet? It doesn’t seem like it. A shocking reality will show.
The ketogenic diet has gained big popularity during the last decade, primarily because that it has shown a bit of short-term succes on weight loss. This diet is also described as a very-low-carbohydrate diets. Even though is has been promoted for weight loss and, then it’s less commonly promoted for overall health. As mentioned, the keto diet may reduce body weight, but it is shown that it’s not more effectively than other dietary approaches over the long term. The popularity of the diet comes down to 3 things:

- You are able to eat the food you are already addictive to.

What happens in the body on a ketogenic diet
Basically, what you are doing is cutting out the carbs, eat protein, go nuts on the fats, hydrate and avoid starchy vegetables & fruits. Which means that you can eat seafood, meat, poultry, eggs, high-fat dairy products, and non-starchy vegetables like bell peppers, broccoli, zucchini, avocados, nuts and seeds, olive oil and other oils.
When your cells don’t get the glucose they need for energy the body breaks down fat into molecules called ketones. The body does this when it doesn’t have enough insulin to use glucose, which is the body’s normal source of energy. Your body is now burning fat for energy instead of being fuelled on sugars. Ketones will circulate in the blood and become the main source of energy for many cells.
Ketones upset the chemical balance of your blood and can/will poison the body. Eventually they build up in the blood. When ketones build up in the blood, they make it more acidic. Your body cannot tolerate large amounts of ketones and will try to get rid of them through the urine.
This may make you feel constantly tired, skin irradiation, difficulty breathing, fruity odor on breath, having a hard time paying attention, or confusion.
When eating diets with very low carbohydrate foods it comes with a risks. These diets may increase chronic disease risk. LDL cholesterol will rise, sometimes dramatically. The ketogenic foods items (eg, red meat, processed meat, saturated fat) are linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease, whereas intake of protective foods (eg, vegetables, fruits, legumes, starch, whole grains) typically decreases.
Did you know; Pregnant women on such a keto diet are more likely to have a child with a neural tube defect, even when supplementing folic acid. The neural tube forms the early brain and spine.
Keto kidney problems
As said, the ketogenic diet’s emphasis on high-fat, animal-based foods while excluding many fruits and vegetables. This promotes a urinary milieu for kidney stones. Dietary animal protein consumption is a well-established promoter of kidney stones. The acidosis caused by the ketogenic diet may also encourage stone formation by lowering urinary citrate and pH levels while having calcium levels increased in urine.
High animal fat and protein consumption has been associated with increased risk of developing albuminuria. Albuminuria is a sign of kidney disease and means that you have too much albumin in your urine. Albumin is a protein found in the blood. A healthy kidney doesn’t let albumin pass from the blood into the urine. This is an very unhealthy state for the body which can cause fatigue, dizziness, dyspnea (shortness of breath), easy bruising & swelling of the face.
When taking a look at people who overeat on protein. Studies have often found that there is currently no reasonable scientific findings which recommend protein consumption above normal requirements for healthy adults – not even for people who work out a lot. This is because of the big disease risks and the metabolic burden on bones, kidneys and liver.
So for conclusion. Low-carb diets causes weight loss by making people sick. You can say, ketosis happens when the body is starving to death which isn’t a sustainable state to be in. Better weight-loss ideas could be to practice Mindful-eating or trying a plant-based lifestyle, which is scientifically proven to show better long term results.
